Ahuahu Mercury Island:

An International Dark Sky Sanctuary in the Making

We are on a mission to secure the prestigious designation of International Dark Sky Sanctuary, recognising Ahuahu's commitment to preserving and celebrating the untouched wonders of our night sky.

What is an International Dark Sky Sanctuary?

An International Dark Sky Sanctuary is land that has an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is protected for its scientific, natural, or educational value, its cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment.

Why become an International Dark Sky Sanctuary?

There are many benefits in becoming an International Dark Sky Sanctuary for both the sanctuary area and its surrounding communities. These benefits flow from preserving natural darkness, enhancing astronomical opportunities, conserving biodiversity, boosting education, fostering community engagement, promoting health and well-being and acknowledgment of cultural and spiritual significance.
